Do you drink softened water? The probable answer will be No. Though, some of you might be drinking soft water. No offense. Softened water is the water that comes out in the output end from a water softener. It’s the hard water in the first place which is treated inside the Water Softener, that gives out the soft water in the resulting side.
Is this softened water suitable for animal or specifically cats? Let’s find out.
Is Softened Water a good option for the Cats?
To be quick with the answer, I would like to say No. If you are not drinking soft water, then how could you think of feeding the same water to your kitty? Keep soft water tanks for your pets.
The reasons that make the soft water unhealthy for us, remains the same in case of the animals too.
Most of the Water Softeners follow the method of ion-exchange, during which the hard minerals like calcium and magnesium are replaced with the sodium ions. Yes, salt is used for the softening process. This way, the softened water will have a high level of sodium content in it making it less suitable for drinking, cooking purpose.
Coming to the point of softened water for cats, if you are mixing this water to the cat food – the food already has salt in it, and the salt in the water will simply make the food high on salt and unhealthy for them.
As a solution to this, you can do some by-pass setup on the plumbing and let your pet have the tap water instead. Well, salts are essential for the pet’s health but there are certain limits there.
Make a note of the tap water compositions too, that will give you double surety of the Water Quality. Also, it is still not proven if the softened water is good for cats or not. Still, I won’t recommend.
